Bakasana or Crow is one of my most-loved asanas!
I remember the first time I tried this pose, like it was yesterday! I got both toes to hover off the ground for a few seconds, and I felt like Super Woman! It was the first time I had ventured towards a pose that wasn't my basic standing pose practice. It opened my eyes to my potential, and pushed me to deepen my practice & expand my goals!
It is the gateway to all of the other fun arm balances! It guides you to the strength & balance you crave, and the fact that you lean & gaze forward, makes it a fear crushing pose!
If you're scared to try, because you have a fear of falling on your face - I encourage you to let yourself do just that! Once you fall on your face, congratulations to you! That is the worst it can get from here on out with Bakasana. That wasn't so bad, right?
If you don't fall, you don't grow - so smile & laugh when you fall! Because most likely, the next time you try, you won't fall. You'll stick it, and your eyes will widen with excitement! It's beautiful, relish in the journey of this pose!
Follow these 7 easy steps to rock it in crow! Here we go - From the ground, up!
1. Palms & Fingers Root Down - This is your base, root down into the grown like an old, old tree that refuses to waver!
2. Elbows Point Back (to avoid splaying elbows & floppy triceps!) Triceps Squeeze IN to the midline - Shoulders & Chest engage!
3. Arms = Shelf for your knees - literally!
4. Gaze forward! Not down - forward.
5. Knees to armpits (or close to them) as you gaze and lean forward - knees resting on your shelf arms. Inner thighs squeeze towards eachother - this will help as you keep your core strong (helping with balance & leading to step 7) and will also help lock your knees in place on your arms.
6. Heels towards your Booty - Or, if you aren't ready to let your crow fly just yet, just alternate lifting one foot off the ground towards your booty at a time. Still growing, still on your journey of fabulousness!
7. Coil up - Core is strong, and back is rounded. Pairing these actions with leaning even more forward will help you take Crow to the next level - Crane (Arms towards Straight)
Whew!
